Anybody else working through those Nanowrimo Coursera courses? I know I asked before, but...crickets. I am already a bit behind, but will be catching up over the weekend.
The first assignment was to write three paragraphs of description using all senses. Here's mine.
Celia’s woolen stockings gave little protection against the still-brown vegetation along the edge of the path to the orchard, as she received several prods and scratches on her ankles as she fled to find a moment of solitude. It was still very cold, even for early March, and the wind pushed through the bare tree limbs as effectively as it blew through her warmest pelisse. It was dark green wool, and though it lacked fashionable fur trim, it was her favorite -- new only the previous winter, purchased when the pressure on her father’s finances had finally eased. It was a well-cut garment and almost fashionable, at least for the provincial sort of seamstress in nearby Oxford they could now afford to patronize.
Her exasperation with her step-mother had given rise to a hasty exit, and though she had remembered her bonnet she had forgotten her gloves. Celia gave a distasteful huff at the silence surrounding the dormant apple trees, and tucked her freezing hands inside her cuffs, locking them together at the wrists in a chilly embrace. She vowed to restore her normal cheerful mien before she returned to the house, for Lily’s sake if no one else.
She would have tea in the nursery with Lily, she decided as she stopped to lean against an obliging tree, her breath calming. She would pour mostly milk into Lily’s cup herself, and likely wipe the strawberry jam from her sister’s sticky fingers when they finished, even if the nursery maid objected. It was calm in the nursery; it felt safe there. Her childhood samplers hung on its walls, and it smelled of dusty schoolbooks and coal dust. Though she’d left its confines several years earlier, its pokey fire and dim windows were reassuring. And Lily needed her, needed someone to care.
I maybe cheated a little by folding it into an existing work. But why should I waste it if I can use it?
