One of the non-Bowie-related highlights of our Chicago trip was finally getting to meet Sue.
Nicknamed "Sue" for the woman who discovered her in 1990 (Susan Hendrickson), this fossil is the most complete T-Rex unearthed to date - she even had one of only two intact T-Rex arms ever found. Over 90% of her skeletal remains were intact! She was also the focus of a lengthy court battle over how fossil ownership rights are determined.
Sue is a pretty serious, pretty amazing fossil. I was completely blown away.
I explained all of this as I showed my best friend photos from my phone. His eyes started to glaze over about two sentences in, so I sighed, rolled my eyes, and said, "Sue is the T-Rex that Harry Dresden reanimated and rode into battle in the book 'Dead Beat.'"
"Oh, really?" my friend said, as he snatched my phone for a closer look. "That's cool."
So, I guess Sue really does have something for everyone - or at least for people who are either paleontology nuts and/or fans of urban fantasy. Both, in my case. Heh.
