#BREAKING: Sea Shepherd Global Launches 11th Whale Defense Campaign in the Southern Ocean
This December Sea Shepherd Global will once again set sail for Antarctica in order to defend, conserve and protect minke whales in the Southern Ocean's designated whale sanctuary. It will be Sea Shepherd's 11th Southern Ocean whale defense campaign and shall be named Operation Nemesis, after the Greek goddess of inescapable justice.
In 2014 a landmark ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague found the Japanese whaling fleet in contempt of the Australian Federal Court for killing protected whales in the Australian Whale Sanctuary and declared their Antarctic whaling program not scientific in nature. After a one-year hiatus the whaling fleet returned to the Southern Ocean, during the 2015/2016 season, and slaughtered 333 minke whales under a revised research program, which was also rejected by the International Whaling Commission.
Disappointed by the lack of action from the international community, Sea Shepherd Global is preparing to return to the Southern Ocean with our new patrol vessel, The MV Ocean Warrior. Built with the financial support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, the British People’s Postcode Lottery and the Svenska PostkodLotteriet, The MV Ocean Warrior is the fastest in our fleet and designed to operate in extreme weather conditions.
