thx to @budnitz for this clarification!
Hi! There has been some discussion about the difference between paid advertising on Ello (which Ello does not and will not do), and companies creating sites for their businesses and posting their products on Ello. Here's the deal. Ello is ad-free. This means we do not sell ads, boosted posts, or mess with your FRIENDS & NOISE feeds in any way. We also don't collect & sell you personal data on Ello. We do not make money on ads. Period. On the other hand, anyone can join Ello, including humans and companies, as long as they act cool and follow the Rules. So: if a big car company, or a small clothing brand makes a profile on Ello and fills it with the things they sell, that's cool. If you aren't interested in seeing any of that — you just don't have to follow them. The point is that on Ello, you have a choice. You'll never see a post in your FRIENDS & NOISE feed that by anyone you haven't chosen voluntarily to follow. The only exception is an occasional public service announcement by Ello (us) if we want to notify you of new features, and stuff like that.
