I get that a lot of people think abortion is a terrible thing. I'm one of them. It's a terrible procedure that I wouldn't wish on any woman, but it's often the lesser of multiple evils, which is why it's still around and why there will be a demand for it.
However, we have within our grasp a simple solution that will cut down the need for abortions by 99%. It's called Vasalgel, and it has the potential to revolutionize birth control. It was developed in India, and is a simple shot that fills the vas deferens with a gel that literally destroys sperm on contact. It lasts for ten years, and is reversible. It has no side effects, is 100% effective if administered correctly, and the FDA is in the process of approving it right now. So, here is my three-step plan to all but eliminate abortions in america:
1. Approve Vasalgel. Fast-track it to get it on the market as quickly as possible. Also, buy out the patent and make it so that any drug company can make it. We're gonna need a lot of it, especially at first.
2. Mandate that every 13-year-old boy get this shot. Make it free and easily available. Remove the Child Tax Credits for any families that refuse, and forbid any male children from attending public school if they don't have it done.
This may seem invasive, but we already do this with immunizations, and it absolutely falls under the purview of public health; just one we couldn't address so effectively until now.
This may also seem sexist, but women have had the burden of birth control for so long that this will be a refreshing change for them. Besides, it's far more effective to empty the gun than to wear a bulletproof vest.
3. Fully cover the costs of Vasalgel. Whether this is done through health insurance, private charities, or the government doesn't matter. Any man who wants to can get "topped up" free of charge. We may also consider an option of requiring parenting courses before allowing for a Vasalgel reversal, but I recognize that might be a controversial option.
Anyone who is serious about ending abortion should be on board with this. If not, they are most likely operating from a hidden agenda related to policing sexual behavior, and will quickly be revealed as being disingenuous in their motives.
This will not end abortion completely, but should reduce it to where it's only done in extreme medical emergencies. In those cases, it would be done in a hospital anyway. There will still be a need for sex education and reproductive health clinics, but they can focus on prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, or taking care of women who want to have babies. The protesters can go home, knowing that the only babies being aborted are the ones who will kill their mother if they're not.
