#art/#history: did this little sparrow live la vie en rose? abandoned by her mother at birth, #otd in 1915, she was left shortly thereafter by her father to grow up in a norman brothel with her paternal grandmother. by 1929, she had reunited with her papa & they performed acrobatics together for curious passersby on the streets of menilmontant. it was pigalle where, in 1935, she found her voice & the name that would bring her fame: piaf. cocteau recognised her magnificence & cast her in his 1940 play, 'le bel indifferent' - which arced her trajectory skyward. the diminutive madame loved & lost, spilling her sorrow across the floors of concert halls far & wide...but her heart never mended after marcel cerdan died suddenly in 1949. addiction to alcohol & morphine tried to snuff out her 4 foot 10 inch frame, but she held on doggedly to give one last performance at her beloved olympia in paris, 1963 - not six months before she died. i'm betting she had no regrets.
