According to the reading, there are seven characteristics of creative thinking which include receptivity, curiosity, wide range of interests, attentiveness, connection seeking, conviction, and complexity. These traits are common in creative people and help them to make the impossible a reality. It also stresses the importance of having goals which push people to test the boundaries and strive to better themselves and their skills. Goals should be challenging but possible to achieve, be self-directed, be clear, and have an end date. It can often be a lot of work and time required to reach one’s goals so time management is essential.
In addition to creative thinking, artists must be critical thinkers. They have to be able to consider compositional strengths, expand on their concepts, and successfully be able to communicate information visually. The strengths and weaknesses of a piece of art is more obvious to the artist when hearing an outside opinion. A critique is the most common way to do this and there are different types. Objective criticism focuses on how the art uses the principles and elements of design while subjective criticism focuses more on the emotion, the personal impact of an image, the narration, and the cultural aspects of a work of art. There are a number of other critique styles that further focus in on specific aspects of a work in order to analyze and understand it further.
