Color is extremely important when creating the emotional power of a work, according to “The Element of Color.” There are two different systems of color used in art and design, one is called additive color and the other is subtractive color. Both of these systems use just three colors to make millions of different colors. Another important aspect of color is how it can be influenced by other colors when side by side. Changing a different color in a design can make a color that was once bright not stand out and vice versa among many other things.
A color has many aspects that affect how it appears. These include hue, temperature, value and intensity. Colors also have a methodology of how they are displayed to create or ruin a visual harmony. Analogous colors are colors next to each other on the color wheel so there is some contrast but a sense of unity to the colors. Complementary colors on the other hand are complete opposites on the color wheel and their contrast helps to increase the impact of one another. Color theory is important in all art but in graphic design it is important because it can be used to emphasize a word or piece of information by making it stand out.
