I think artists, by necessity, should assume a solipsistic worldview--at least when their art is concerned. We should allow our monomania to guide us without regard for other people. If people don't "get" what you're trying to do or say, if they don't understand it, then it's not your problem. It's not their problem, either. It's no one's problem because it's not a problem. The minute you consider other people, or try to anticipate what you think they might like or dislike, is the minute you've killed a part of yourself. Compromise = death.
