The sign disturbed me. You don't bow with your knees, you bow from the waist. Nothing that I have read about Jesus suggested that he was interested in having people bow - or kneel, for that matter. Jesus rejected what he saw as false religious authority and social position based upon wealth. Similarly, the first Quakers rejected the intertwined hierarchies of state and church, as it all seemed so false and dishonest. They refused to remove their hats as a gesture of deference (including in a court of law). Nor would they use the formal speech of the times, preferring to address everyone using the familiarThee and Thou. Quakers today no longer use archaic language, but retain a focus upon the importance of individual experience as the true source of spirituality - without kneeling or bowing, I might add. It is said that we sit in silence until moved to speak, but actually, it is stillness, not silence.
