Just saw an indie film, pre-release, about climate change.
I need to talk about it.
The film suggests that wide-spread apathy and denial of climate change is due largely to psychological denial on the part of individuals. This explanation is a red-herring which blames the victims. The problem is political.
The film did not address legislative gridlock, nor the subversion of our legislature by lobbyists. There was no mention of the sneaky propaganda campaign on the part of ALEC, which conspires to discredit climate science, nor was there any description of the complicity of the fossil fuel industry in misleading the public about climate science.
In the film, no mention was made of of the repression of the Occupy Movement, growth of wealth Inequality, resurgence of voter suppression, mass surveillance of all electronic communications by our own government, without any requirement of a warrant, intimidation of investigative journalists, destruction of the labor unions, loss of the middle class, and secret negotiations of international trade agreements that will favor the rights of multi-national corporations over our legal system. The film did not address the recalcitrance of obscenely wealthy oligarchs (the .01%), nor did it point out the ruthless power of multinationals that exploit the poor and externalize the costs of pollution they have created, while obstructing an adequate response to global warming. No mention was made of the Pope's encyclical regarding response to climate change as a moral and spiritual obligation.
In short, the film was irrelevant and misguided. It left me frustrated. Thank you for listening.
