The creek that runs through town is the scene of salmon swimming upstream to spawn. It is not legal to just snag them, unless that happens accidentally while trying to catch them with bait, so those who fish must pretend to be using lures as bait. Did I mention that spawning salmon are not very interested in eating?
It is necessary to use a net to take a hooked salmon. There are stairs down to the water at the other end of this line of people fishing and that's where the netting gets done after the fish is led to that spot. If the guy in the blue shirt in the foreground gets a salmon on the line, he will call out. Every person at the rail will lift his rod so that a person with a fish can pass under him to get to the stairs. This happens rather often, as there are a lot of salmon being caught. It looks like a military wedding, in which the couple passes beneath an arch of crossed swords.
It is impressive how the group manages to cooperate, in spite of each person fishing being intent upon what he or she is doing - rather like cars entering a freeway during rush hour. The high level of cooperation despite the busy crowd of intent individuals may in part be due to the festive atmosphere brought about by an abundance of food that is almost free for the taking.
