That tall, brooding figure with slumped shoulders and bowed head you may recognize from the back, even at a distance. His massive boots, might make you wonder, who could fill the shoes of such a man after he is gone? A young black man leaned against the pedestal and reached up to give Mr. Lincoln the complicated handshake reserved for the brotherhood. Mr. Lincoln did not respond, but neither did he seem to object. A black couple perched their children at Mr. Lincoln's feet and took a picture. I noticed how the the patina on the finger tips on Mr. Lincoln's hand was worn away by the fingers of those who felt the need to touch him.
