Beyond the sidewalk near the paint store, are two trees. When the trees were saplings, somebody drove four pieces of rebar deep into the surrounding soil of each, and made wire supports, cushioned with sections of garden hose that would protect them from abrasion. What became of that person is unknown, but the trees grew and the support wire became deeply embedded, as you can see, gouging itself deep into the wood. Each wire popped as I cut it and the tension was released. The rebar snapped backward like a trap sprung. The trees sighed with relief. Or maybe that was me.
