A woman was asked if she would like to join a group concerned with caring for the Earth, and wrking toward environmental justice. The woman thought carefully, and replied that she felt called to join a group that would provide hospice care for the Earth.
"Hospice care for the Earth", that phrase led me to conclude that we are avoiding the grief of all that we are going to lose as climate changes the world in which we live. Lack of action to salvage whatever we can may be due to the fact that first we need to express or grief for the loss of all that is beautiful and wonderful in the world.
I can live with the idea of my own death. I can live with the idea of the death of my family. I can live with the possiblity of the death of my community. But what is most difficult to live with is the thought of losing the entire world. I can't live with that idea. I cannot yet grieve, even as the chaos and loss has begun.
