Nice article. Captures the supportive atmosphere. But Ello is an iceberg. Visual artists are what is above the surface. The conflation of "(visual) artists" with "creativity", which includes many people, while obscuring others whose expression may not involve visual representation: writers, musicians, poets, futurists, cultural critics, those concerned with online privacy/security, sustainable living, and politics - especially the politics of the frustrated and marginalized. More than one hundred Ello Communities (which vary in level of participation) suggest that many people are here for the conversation and connection with others who are interested in abstract ideas that do not necessarily lend themselves to visual representation. English language dominates and most members American, but people post in other (mostly European) languages and there is opportunity to engage with people from all over the world. Visual representations have the power to transcend the lack of a common spoken language. Creativity independent of visual media is the part of the iceberg below the surface, but while less recognized, may be quite large.
