Another of the 37,638 songs that make up my personal top ten songs all time. Its a song called "Spaced Cowboy" from the album "There's a riot going on," by Sly & The Family Stone. Released in the tumultuous year of 1971, it proved to be a total retreat from the frothy, happy sound that put The Family Stone on the map. Its decidedly dark, with a funky junkie vibe, reflecting Sly's slide into the life of a vampire. It spawned two hits; "Family Affair" A slow smoldering look at life in the ghetto, and "Running Away", where a funky buoyant beat belies the bitterness of the lyric.....
In it's own way its a fascinating glimpse into a side of life most of us will never know, a society being devastated by drugs and thugs and the violence of living.
In the middle of all this "Spaced Cowboy" is a tragicomedy, a soporific slinky barely coherent mumble that just gets to me every time.....https://youtu.be/L8Ubq7NpJcU
I can say it more than once
'Cause I'm thinking twice as fast, yodel-ayde-a
Everything I like is nice
That's why I try to have it twice, yodel-ayde-a
Well, once I saw a bore
Who was a social whore, yodel-ayde-a
And they said I had a limp
And then they tried to pass around a pimp, yodel-ayde-a
Was on my last leg
I couldn't even borrow my friend's extra peg at all, yodel-ayde-a
Once I turned red
And it looked funny in the head, yodel-ayde-a
