The Dumbest union in the USA?
The NFL Players' union, Hands down.
The NFL is a cutthroat business, it always has been...it always will be. Careers are not measured in decades. Some of the "skill positions" have a career average of about 5 years.....The competition is fierce....anyone...everyone...is a coach's decision away from unemployment. There are guys lookin' for your job all the time....there are people looking for guys that can take your job and do it better and cheaper. Everybody who makes it to that level knows all this. In a bid to strengthen their job security, the players, through their union, demanded far fewer practices, fewer "two-a-days", less time a coach can spend with players....all kinds of rules designed to protect themselves from the tsunami of new players that arrives every year. To achieve this they gave The Commissioner plenipotentiary powers with regard to discipline. They gave him the power of judge, jury, and sentencing agent. They gave him the right to be the hearing officer and arbitrator for any appeal of any of his decisions.
The Court of Appeals avers that the Union must play by the contract they signed.
And the reduced practice time, many believe, is a major contributor to the spate of serious, career threatening injuries in the NFL.
Make no mistake........the union blew it big time.
