Statement: Eyes have been long considered to be windows or mirrors of the soul. These portraits embody a connection of reality & imagination, linking celestial bodies to fragile & temporary human forms. Abstract concepts of self & perception are represented by the swirls & textures obscuring the eyes in each artwork. The surreal elements are splattered with stars, symbolizing a universe, to represent the soul or inner world of the subject to create a portrait of self that reveals these unseen elements of personality. Human connection, our vast global network of souls, is more complex & has more potential for beauty than gender, skin color, culture or belief can describe. Both foreign & familiar, the unknown equalizes us all, & seeing ourselves in unexpected ways, reflected in watercolor, acrylic, & pastels, can constructively disrupt our senses, & reveal our selves more clearly; clearer than reflective glass, binary code, or genetic helix can capture. Somewhere in these inanimate artworks you may find yourself reminded of our animate but intangible true selves, & how you are choosing to see the darkness or light of beauty with your perception, not just your eyes.
