Hello! My name is Keara Douglas. I am the founder and head graphic artist for Delux Designs (DE), LLC. My submission piece is a digital illustration titled, "The People Say Guilty". I created this piece about a year ago now in light of the tragic and senseless shooting death of Trayvon Martin. I often create my artwork as ways to communicate different social issues to the public, highlighting bad times in our history as African Americans. For this one, I focused on the effects of this tragedy by showing Trayvon Martin himself as a center focus. I wanted to show him in a more positive light even though the media often portrayed him as a troubled teen. He is shown in his football uniform from school here. Behind him is an image of George Zimmerman, the shooter who murdered him for walking home from the store. He was supposed to be the night crime watcher who was supposed to be in place to keep people like Martin safe in his own neighborhood while walking or driving home, but unfortunately Zimmerman turned out to be the predator in this case. Zimmerman was placed behind Martin to represent him not being above the teen. He is shown with half a face and looking up towards Martin to represent his guilt in the shooting death of the teen. It is also to represent Zimmerman's deep down fear of the teen, and as to the true meaning of why he shot and killed him as the only valid reasoning. On the right hand side in the back, is a representation of the people of Florida who took to the streets to voice their concern and hurt for the senseless killing of Trayvon Martin under the controversial Stand Your Grounds law of the state.
