This picture means alot to me. Not because of what it is, but because what happened after I took it. My friend Max and I hiked all day over the mountains. We had seen grizzly the day before, so we were on the lookout as always.
Then it happened.
A grizzly Mama and her cub came walking across the water not too far from us. We sunk down and slowly made our way back up the trail to climb up a rock wall. She was moving quickly and her cub seemed to bop along having the time of his life. It was a very sobering moment, she passed under us no more than 15 feet, stopped, sniffed around, and was on her way. For a movement I pulled out my spray thinking, "shit, I’m actually going to use this stuff.” I’m thankful we took time to learn about bears, and what to do during an encounter. We climbed across a small cliff and made our way down the mountain, Max fell into a tree and lost his shoe. (Sorry man it was really funny). Making our way out we were covered in cuts, dirt, and branches and gratitude. We hitched a ride with a couple from Nevada to take us back to our car. Again, more gratitude.
Glacier is wild, and the bear taught us both a valuable lesson. For me, things come at you, and you have to think your way around it. So when I struggle with something now, I think of the bear. See what happened that day was a gift of perspective. Our problems are only opportunities to work around. We just need to take a breath, and think. Think about what we can do, and then think about what we are thankful for.
