Since the last time I’ve posted anything of note when it comes to writing (it’s been about a year I think, if not more), I’ve been doing nothing but making excuses to myself about why I don’t have time to write. Not for lack of things to write about because I’ve still been reading, but silly mundane excuses like “I need to take the dogs out for a walk”, or “I need to go to the store to buy a new notebook to write in”, or most often “I need to go to work”. Now, in the midst of a global pandemic, the universe has decided that I am to have no excuses any longer. I have an iPad to write with, and my job is temporarily shut down for at least the next two weeks. I am perfectly healthy, and have nothing but time and a backlog of books that I’ve read but have yet to write my opinions on (not that anyone is asking for them).
Despite the backlog, I’ll start off with a book that I’ve read most recently. I’m always a fan of bringing attention to new authors, and Andrea Harris is no exception. Full disclaimer: Andrea is a childhood friend of mine, but that in no way affects how I feel about her debut novel: The Fallen Cupid: An Ace Mystery.
The Fallen Cupid: An Ace Mystery is about a high school senior named Alexandra Easter, or Ace for short. Her life is turned absolutely upside down when her father suddenly decides to up and move their small family of two away from the sunny beaches of California, and to the boring plains of Kansas. The sudden death of Alexandra’s mother left her father in search of a greasy start that he thought the plains would provide. As Ace prepares to finish her senior year at her new school, she finds out that life in the plains is anything but boring as she is thrown into a whirlwind of romance, drama, and of course murder. Being the daughter of two great detectives it is not long before Ace throws herself into investigating the mysterious deaths of several of her fellow female classmates, their murders perpetrated by someone only known as “Cupid”. The novel follows Ace as she tries to balance school, romance, and secret detective work, all while trying to make sure that she or someone she loves doesn’t end up becoming Cupid’s next victim.
As a first novel, The Fallen Cupid shows plenty of promise. The neverending whirlwind of romance and action, and the mystery unfolding before both Ace and the reader makes this book an absolute page turner from start to finish. Andrea’s descriptive writing and engaging characters keep the reader’s attention as you begin to wonder if maybe this guy is Cupid, or that guy is Cupid and the ending ties up so neatly, but with just enough of a cliffhanger to make me look forward to the sequel whenever it comes out.
If you, like me, are stuck in your house for the foreseeable future, I recommend you pick up a copy of The Fallen Cupid and read it for yourself. You might just find your new favorite author, and a character with a familiar name.
