Lofoten Islands, Norway
During my second visit to Norway I did a couple overnight hikes in the Lofoten Islands. Pictured here is me with my old bright blue Deuter bag that has served me well for several years. There are no particularly "long" hikes in this area as all the islands are very small but the ideal thing to do here is to hike a couple hours off the road and set up a base camp. From there you can climb up to some of the surrounding peaks. On this particular trek we got caught up in a heavy rain storm and ended up sitting in our tents for pretty much an entire day getting poured on. Once the sky cleared up we had thick mud to trek through as we climbed up to some of the peaks around us. The majority of my friends are not into backpacking. It's not for everyone. But those of us who do it know very well the reward is worth the effort. Even if you're not rewarded with a stunning view, you'll always have a fun story to tell from the experience.
