Making a personality system map is a way of improving communication and getting to know one another more. It is helpful because it gathers basic information about everyone and shows that each alter is important and valued. Making a system map means you need to co-operate and communicate with one another. Some alters may not want their names or details known, so some negotiation may be needed.
The map can be kept only for yourselves, or can be shared with a therapist if everyone is willing to do that. A basic map can be hand-drawn or electronic, with each alter being represented by a circle containing their name. The host (person normally in the body the most) is often put in the center to represent this.
Useful things which can later be added for each alter include:
Role: (e.g., protector, child, host, holds memories, holds anger, caretaking)
Some people choose to add things like Gender, Sexuality, Hair color or Comfort items.
