The Fragility of Digital Memory
When I teach my glitch art classes I can't stretch enough the argument about the fragility of digital memory. I think this spontaneous glitch (wild glitch) photo expresses so well this idea putting face to face memory of the past that last for years against a digital photo that glitches in seconds. I was uploading pics into a slide on @Instagram for Android and glitched the Colosseum. There is a bug that makes glitches to happen when the app saved the photos from a slide in the photo gallery of our Android phone ruining a photo but putting us in front of a reality, digital memory is very fragile would it be because a glitch, because copyright or proprietary rights, because obsolescence. We face the urgence of digital conservation. An architecture standing there for centuries as memory of the Roman Empire vs a digital photo that gets ruined in seconds. I am very interested in the topic of #digitalconservation, #digitalmemory and #digitalarchiviation and #newmediaarcheology as we are handling our whole life, and memory, to digital but totally ignoring the fragility and vulnerability and temporaneity of it. Please send me videos, texts to read on the topics, I would very much appreciate it.
