Group comms: Having a bit of a chat elsewhere about Yahoo and rumors swirling about it
There seems to be a growing consensus that it's either not long for this world or will be engaged in a major merger (either acquiring or being acquired). Neither of which bodes well for the service IMO.
But a lot of people host email lists on Yahoo.
I took a quick DDG search and turned up a few email list providers who are cheap or free, but not a whole lot. Which raises the question: what are other people doing?
There's also the question of whether or not Ello would be interested in the space, and on what sort of schedule. My initial guess would be that it's a ways off, though some sort of group / community support could be useful -- you'd be pulling a bunch of folks over in one fell swoop (though there's no immediately evident revenue model).
It also raises the question of how you might want to re-imagine a mailing list.
The good is that it's a minimum-standards medium which most people can access. The bad is that it's increasingly a PITA to set up and configure, there are spam and abuse factors, and getting people to read / respond to email is getting harder.
I've had some joy with tools such as reddit.
