"One of my first jobs in computing was working on the avionics and flight control panel for the <redacted> radar system in the air defense variant of the RAF's Tornado aircraft. We thought we'd done a pretty good job with Knob, Dial & Button placement and operation on the prototype. After the first test flight, the navigator announced that it was unusable.
"We were a little surprised, as he'd been with us throughout development. "Works fine in the lab, but not so good upside down pulling 6G wearing flight gloves". So three of us software guys were invited along for a ride, to get the point across. An afternoon I will never forget (yes, I lost my lunch, three times) and a big lesson in UI design. Never underestimate the hostility of the operating environment."
