An Ello "LJ-CUT" limited post preview -- in CSS
Several people, most of them @fendersonia, have suggested that some sort of truncated preview for long posts might be handy on Ello.
I'd been kicking that idea around myself for a while, and yesterday, I finally whipped up a "post preview" style in CSS.
What you get looks like this:
Since I'm working only in CSS and can't modify Ello's source HTML, there are limits to what I can do, but so far it's got the following:
Post heigh by default is 24em. That should give about ten lines of a post.
There's a bottom border, a fade-to-white background, and a label "More" at the bottom of the post.
Clicking anywhere on the post expands it to full height. This is only somewhat useful as releasing the mouse button collapses the post, and it's frequently scrolled far off-screen, but...
Clicking on the Comments icon will expand the post fully and keep it expanded.
I've applied the style to #profile and expanded stream (Friends / Noise) views, but not grid view, individual post detail, or Search results. For those, my usual case is that since I've already indicated interest in specific content I want to see it fully expanded.
I'd prefer the ability to toggle expanded / collapsed modes, but with just CSS and no ability to insert a checkbox element, that doesn't seem possible.
Overall, I'm kind of liking this. Sufficiently brief to not create miles-long scrolling (apologies again for that, it's ... a bit of a test), but long enough to get a good preview, and I'm finding the click-and-hold or toggle comments actions fairly reasonable compromises.
For those who'd not previously seen my Ello v2 CSS restyling, yes, it changes numerous aspects of the site UI. Including swapping out that typewriter font (actually: AtlasTypewriterRegular", "Andale Mono", "Consolas", "Lucida Console", "Menlo", "Luxi Mono", monospace). I'm planning a longer write-up on that.
