Steve Keen on Sincerity
Speaking of economic theory and its failures. He notes that neoclassical economists are some of the most altruistic people he's met, but that's not good enough.
The irony is, altruism is no defense.
I had a fabulous teacher back in my school days who ran the religion classes and those had open discussion, never intervening.
One day one of the students made a comment about some politician on whom we were debating over. He says, "At least he's sincere." The class sort of murmered, Oh yeah, nobody can deny the guy's sincere." The teacher, who normally kept quiet, piped up from the back of the room, "Don't overestimate sincerity. The most sincere person you'll meet in your life is the maniac chasing you down the road with an axe trying to chop your head off."
