“It will be the oldest artifact of mankind. Because a billion years from now, mountain building and erosion will have destroyed everything on the Earth, but this plaque will remain intact.” —Carl Sagan
I'm pleased to announce that as part of @elloartgiveaways, I'm giving away a laser-engraved reproduction of the Pioneer plaque that I funded on Kickstarter. And along with it, reproductions of the Pioneer 10 and 11 mission patches made in collaboration with the creator of the first NASA meatball patch and every mission and expedition patch flown in space since!
To be eligible to win, simply leave a comment on this post. The giveaway will run until Tuesday, August 29th when a winner will be selected at random.
The Pioneer plaques were launched in 1972 and 1973 aboard NASA’s twin spacecraft, Pioneer 10 and 11. Designed by Frank Drake and Carl Sagan, with artwork by Linda Salzman Sagan, the plaques serve as a galactic greeting card, communicating when and where Pioneer was launched, and by what kind of beings, to alien life forms who might someday encounter it.
Gold-anodized optimism, the plaque is an iconic expression of the vision and spirit that defines humanity at our best. As Carl Sagan once wrote, “the greater significance of the Pioneer plaque is not as a message to out there; it is as a message to back here.”
