I posted this on some other networks, but wanted to follow up here as well. We (wife and both kids) took our 15yo very sick and weak cat, Ellie, to the vet and said our goodbyes. The boys were petting her as the vet made the injection, and she passed before the injection was complete. She was suffering terribly, and at her rate of decline would not have survived more than another week, tops. It was sad for everyone, as she has been with us since our oldest was just 3. Despite the headaches pets can sometimes cause, they do become part of your family. So seeing them go is tough. We'll get used to it little by little, but the boys are already planning on making a picture of her for the wall, complete with a tuft of fur that used to get everywhere.
