Happy birthday to the Oh-My-God particle (not to be confused with the Higgs-Boson “God particle”), or at least our knowledge of it! It was detected by the University of Utah’s Fly’s Eye Cosmic Ray Detector on this day in 1991.
The original Oh-My-God particle was an ultra-high energy cosmic ray, an atomic nucleus with a kinetic energy of 48 joules moving at nearly the speed of light. Since the initial observation, there have been at least fifteen similar events.
And still, none of us is getting Fantastic Four-style superpowers? Come on, universe!
