This week we kicked off a couple dope Artist invites, are launching an exciting Creator Type update, and want to help you win some art. Check it out:
New Post Detail Design
Last week we updated the layout of post details on web. You can read all about the details here. We’ve received a lot of feedback, good and bad. While the new layout allows images to be larger than before on big monitors, they are actually a little smaller on laptops. We have a solution in the works that should be ready soon. I’ll keep you posted.
A while ago we revamped our on-boarding process to include creator types. We simply ask new members if they are artists or fans. If you choose artist we ask what kind (you can select as many as you’d like). The information we’ve been getting is super interesting and helpful (shoutout to the writers). Knowing the creative composition of the community helps us make product decisions, decide which Artist Invites to pursue, and all sorts of other stuff. So in the next week or so we’re going to ask all the current Ello member’s who signed up before the onboarding update to let us know their creator type. We appreciate you taking the time to help us out.
Check out the chart for the current creator composition (only based on new members). Any surprises to you?
We’re also working on creator type badges, so you will have some profile decoration based on your creator type.
Announcing Smiling Gecko: Through The Eyes of the Artist
Hannes Schmid, Boldomatic and Ello partner to raise awareness for the non-profit Smiling Gecko initiative.
“To change the world, you need to be able to think freely and be creative. This will lead to innovation and a new way of thinking. Artist are known for this.” - Hannes Schmid
To provide relief to the needy children and families in Cambodia, Smiling Gecko is pursuing a holistic approach to enable and promote the rural population to live a self-determined life. Since 2014, SGC purchased a 110 ha site in the northern province of Kampong Chnang, at the heart of the organisation’s holistic cluster project. The open cluster model is founded on six pillars that go hand-in-hand and are designed to become self-financing. Their vision is to create a model rural community capable of operating as a self-sustained entity and providing the people living within it sustainable education and training that earns them dignity and gainful employment.
They are looking for submissions that illustrate how artists CAPTURE/PORTRAY culture, emotions, people, change...the transformation made through the Smiling Gecko initiative.

Diversity Grant Selected Artists
We’re excited to announce the two recipients of the Ello Celebrates Diversity Artist Grants, @liorallay and @kinardistmedia.
I am a 24 year old queer self-taught visual artist, activist, and single mother from the greater Philadelphia area. Although primarily a self portrait artist, I operates from both sides of the lens to design and execute meaningful concepts about the intersection of identity, sexuality, vulnerability, and womanhood in our culture today. I am a proud hairy, unibrowed woman of mixed heritage, a first generation American with Italian, Cherokee, Ojibway, Thai, and Portuguese blood. The set I have presented for submission was made in tandem with fellow queer Israeli photographer Sabina Sister in celebration of the late artist Frida Kahlo who has been my greatest inspiration. These images call into question the beauty standards we are socialized to accept by speaking to the spirit of freedom and bodily autonomy that Frida represents.
Being a black man raised by a single-mother, I have seen first - hand the battles women of color fight to simply exist on a daily basis; I such I've always sought, in my work and my life, to put them at the forefront.
In my work I combine photography with animation to create movement and pull viewers into the piece;
Through this, I carry out what I believe to be a duty as a man of color:
Showing women of color in a light other than simply as sexual objects, stereotypes and/or caricatures of people.
I believe my efforts and the direction I move in my work makes communities like that of @ello stronger and the very least hope people can pull something from it.
A big shout out to everyone who submitted and we hope to see your work again for future Artist Invites. We want to support all of you as much as we can.
