Over the weekend Dylan and I got together and we spent a few hours just shooting. We’d been going back and fourth for a couple weeks trading our frustration with our lack of artistic output, my solution was to create my way out of this funk. So I bought some lights and decided that I needed to bust out of my comfort zone by challenging myself. The most important part is that I had people in my life to whom I could turn to and say “hey let’s shoot,” and then we get together to do just that. Dylan and I didn’t have anything in particular we were shooting for, there wasn’t a theme or any of the things that typically drive a shoot for me… this was just an opportunity for us to get back in the game, to test ourselves. My only requirement is that Dylan just be themself… and that is certainly never a concern. I’ve been shooting my SX-70 for exactly a year now and that camera is every bit as amazing as I wanted it to be, but in all that time one element of shooting with it that has eluded me is exposure. Unless you’re shooting with flash (which I typically default to) I never know how the electric eye is going to read the scene’s lighting. At $2.50 a shot it’s painful to spent 1-2 frames figuring out how much “dark” or “light” I should add to get the proper exposure. This shot here I figured that out, and Dylan fills the frame with an undeniable personality.
