Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts described edgelands as; ‘Somewhere in the hollows and spaces between our carefully managed wilderness areas and the creeping, flattening effects of global capitalism ... successive human utilities scar the earth ... complicated, unexamined places that thrive on disregard.’
Operation of the Terrasson – Hautefort railway line started in 1898 and ended by 1939. The iron was removed during the WWI, and within 20 years of being replaced, again for WWII. Driving through the ‘causes’ today much of the 22 km long trace remains visible. The beauty and craftsmanship of the tunnels and bridges is somewhat mind bugling.
Personal favorite must be the railway station of Villac, village of 250 inhabitants in the middle of nowhere. The station and surrounding area is the only piece of flat land, and presently in use as football pitch and support facilities, the bbq area reuses the former passenger’s shelter, and the toilets still function!
