Meet Creator of Stuff Cosmic Nuggets
Scotland-based Cosmic Nuggets – @cosmicnuggets – creates sci-fi-inspired illustrations and sculptures that defy reality and encourage weirdness. Inspiration sources include bike rides, the internet and you fine folks. Read on to learn more about the artist.
Interviewer Alexi Ueltzen – @alexi – is Ello's Community Evangelist. When she's not Ello'ing her butt off, she's probably swimming or taking ugly pictures of her dogs while they sleep.
Alexi: Tell us a little about your background. How did you get into illustration?
Cosmic Nuggets: I’m a big sci-fi, art, movies and music, and as a kid I was always drawing my fave characters from sci-fi movies. Pre-internetting days all I had was ye olde b+w 4-channel TV, so any movie I could catch on it was always like a magical moment! I remember drawing characters and tools from Krull once, I can’t even remember how old I was, but yeah. . .I’ve always loved drawing characters so Kosmic Nuggetzz kind of just naturally arrived.
I guess I always wanted to create something mysterious and weird, and also something that wasn’t really tied to a person specifically, just so I could make whatever I liked and feel completely free and to get down with the sci-fi loving. To be honest, I was also getting so bored and frustrated with digital things, scribbling away with a pencil was the perfect meditation. Highly recommended to get back to reality.
Alexi: Where does the name “Cosmik Nuggetz” come from?
Cosmic Nuggets: I don’t even remember really. I started using it in 2008 and it just sorta stuck. It seems I find small things amusing and I liked the google image search results of all my drawings plus golden nuggets and meteor bits, but then later it was just chicken nuggets and I found that weird, so sometimes I use cosmic nougat, much less meaty! (the irony is also that I don’t eat meat). I guess my dream job (one of them) would be coming up and inventing band names and so forth, imagine that!?
When people ask what I’m doing with my life and I mention “cosmic nuggets” it always seems to get a reaction though, which I find fun, so that also kept it all rolling. I think some people really hate it though, like it’s super cheesy. I remember once on Tumblr I had a girl message me and shoot me down for infiltrating her photo search of actual chicken nuggets, she said something like I was ruining her research by tagging my art #nuggets ;) I love the internet!
Alexi: Your illustrations are so fantastical and you have such a distinct style. Has your work always looked like this or has it been an evolution?
Cosmic Nuggets: Thank you! Urgh, I don’t even know? I can’t even think about what style actually is anymore, like thinking about the infinite universe. I just keep drawing and drawing and things happen. I enjoy making things as fast as possible and so I guess my style maybe comes from that, how to make a line quickly but with some stylistic design sense? My work is also pretty basic, even if it sometimes looks more complicated. I’m always bummed out with my drawing style in a way; I suck so hard at actual life drawing. Someone also said once that my style was naive and I felt bad about that for ages, I mean, I still remember it. I guess they meant naive in a good way? (right?!) But when I hear that I’m like “urghhh, imma noob.”
Alexi: What inspires you, or where do you go for inspiration?
Cosmic Nuggets: I get so pumped looking at all the amazing things online, I’m a total internetz fiend and there’s just so many amazing artists out there, leaving me completely mind blown! I have loads of inspiration folders on my desktop ;) Plus when I really need the magikal inspiration juice I go for a ride on my bike. I get my best ideas when I’m cruising around with my fave sounds in my ears. When I’m crushing around outside and my jam comes on the stereo I get super inspired, I then rush back to my cave and start drawing out a new Gameboy warrior or krystal bruiser. Basically everything and everyone inspires me and I’m constantly sucking it all up. I’m looking at you all!
Alexi: It looks like you focus on illustrating photos, creating illustrations from scratch, and a little bit of 3D/sculptural work. Are there any other mediums you want to explore?
Cosmic Nuggets: I want to explore it alllll! Just not enough hours in the day and I’m so broke that I have to try to always concentrate on the ideas that are cheap to create, that explains my naïve styles. If I had infinite finances to explore my ideas I would definitely try anything and everything I could get my sticky kozmik mitts on! I have little books full of hypothetical ideas on standby just in case my prayers are answered. Today I would like to explore fashion, with felt (armour), create an indoor kozmik tent or my own ceremonial drawing outfit (Tibetan style), tomorrow who knows! Maybe back to bronze casting or working on animation or my debut perfume range. That being said though, I find the best ideas come from the simplest means and that’s why I love drawing so much probably? All you need are very simple materials to express yourself, can’t go wrong.
Alexi: What are your must-have drawing supplies?
Cosmic Nuggets: Bristol Board A4/A3 pad, Pentel p207 0.7mm, rubber and Micron fine liners 0.3
Alexi: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever made (or would like to make someday?)
Cosmic Nuggets: Hmmmmm, let me think!! Define crazy? Hah. I often think that people may see me as crazy for painting rocks and sticks etc., especially if they catch me hiding them back in the wild. I’ve painted and drawn upon a lot of random things, I would absolutely love to paint a clay walled dwelling/eco house or a yurt.
Alexi: Do you have a favorite piece?
Cosmic Nuggets: Aha! I have a few favorite pieces but to be honest I’m my own biggest critic and that is a big factor in keeping me excited so I’m always trying to better myself.
Alexi: Why do you share your work on Ello?
Cosmic Nuggets: Because It’s totally amazing! I’m so exhausted with social networks and faceless nameless internetting things and Ello is a super happy, positive, creative amazing place, I can actually see things I need to see, get inspired and give back some kozmik love! That’s my kinda party! Keep it going!
Alexi: What’s something about you that would surprise our readers?
Cosmic Nuggets: Hmmhmm!!?? There’re a few things I’m sure, one is that I have a Masters Degree in Science :D
