** You seem to be a very engaged person, did you choose to become a designer in order to express yourself or to demonstrate something in particular? If yes, what is it ?
>> I didn't choose to be designer or to express myself, I needed to express myself and had something to say since I was a kid, it was crucial for me and it happens that the only available objects that was accessible to me as a child and during my early teenage years, was clothes and there was a sewing machine home... so this is the how and why I used at first fashion to express everything I had to say ! Now I have developed a much larger panel of ways to express myself ( performances, photos etc ... ) and fashion is still one of the medium I use ! But the message is still the same : HOW TO BE YOURSELF IN OUR SOCIETY !
** “Art is Resistance” is your tagline, do you think that to the nowaday fashion industry is engaged or not enough or not at all ? Which designer (besides, of you :-) ), inspires you through his commitment ?
>> Art is Resistance is one of my differents slogans and is the name of my second line " Art is Resistance by Naco-Paris " that includes hand-painted pieces etc ...
Nowadays fashion industry became a cold and boring cash machine ! I am not looking at what others designers are doing anymore, and I am not really interested to know about it, I do prefer to be concentrated on what I'm doing and trying to resist and to propose something a bit outside of all this mess !
** Could you tell us more about your new collection ? What was your main idea ?
>> The Spring/summer 2019 unisex collection is based on the idea of Circus Artists, not about the shows but about the Artists themselves while they are backstage together before and after the show in their costumes, or also, about artists who entertain people in costumes in the streets . There is some kind of the atmosphere of the movie " Freaks” from Fritz Lang in a heavy modern way, and also the graphic artist Soves Deir Rorge did a portrait of me in that " travesti-clown " way.
** You used a lot of polka dots with a lot of bright red, that reminds me the 50’s pin-up, am I right ? Could you tell us more about your prints ? You used a lot of newspaper prints too, any particular thing to say about it ?
>> The collection is composed of 3 parts : " black & white ", " blue/white/yellow " and " Blue/white/red ". I used dots ( in differents kind of sizes or styles etc ) since my full polka dots collection in 2003 that was a tribute to the artist Leigh Bowery, I am a dots addict and specially polka dots so there are dots every season, sometime everywhere, sometime in a colorful way as the bright red this season, and sometime on a small detail...
The newspaper print was a kind of joke/tribute to the fashion dated of the beginning of the 2000's ( the area when I established Naco-Paris in 2001 ), it was fun to use this print that became a “vintage” print today !
** How do you see fashion, or you in the fashion industry in few years from now ?
>> I think the independent designers have to take their distances a lot from the big groups and the big industry as I am doing since few years already ! I think it will became more radical in the future and this is the only way for us ( independent designers ) to resist : all these big brands make a lot of shit, the quality became really bad and its often looks like " top-shop on a catwalk " ! I don't want to belong to that kind of industry so I’m trying to find other directions ... I will open next year a kind of gallery/shop/workshop that will be not in Paris, it will be in countryside and it will be not about marketing, it will be about Art, creation, experiences ... something human !
