Prince was never shy of expressing himself either through his music or his personal style and while all of our memories of the Purple One will be intrinsically linked in some way to the clothes he wore I find it hard to call him a style icon in the traditional sense. It's almost impossible for the average person to look at a Prince ensemble and see what points of reference they could directly take and infuse into their own wardrobe, even David Bowie who we also tragically lost recently had moments of traditional tailoring and menswear with sartorial lessons for the every man scattered between his more outrageous outfits.
Rather I think of Prince as a style inspiration, much like his music his style was a true reflection of his personality and through the years he never once felt the need to dilute it for fear of criticism nor embarrassment and that may be the one greatest style lesson we could all learn.
