A pep talk for "new canaries": Don't beat yourself up for doing something that leads to a reaction or the ruination of objects; even we "old canaries" make mistakes.
Two days ago I accidentally washed some of my favorite tops and several pairs of good underwear with a very old scarf that had no business being in my laundry bin. I had used the scarf as a belt, and it didn't smell then, but I should have remembered that it had been in the back of my drawer for many years and that it needed to be washed separately.
I couldn't BELIEVE the strength of the perfumey smell that permeated my other clothes! I was seriously worried that they were all ruined. But fortunately my soaking-in-the-hot-sun-water-with-baking-soda trick is working. Two cotton tank tops are useable again, with a little shrinking and fading -- I'm wearing one now. Four pairs of underwear are okay and are in the washing machine now, and I don't expect they will have shrunk.
It will take days to finish processing the rest of the clothes, and I feel like the biggest idiot in the world for messing up my clothes, but hey! Sh*t happens, even to canaries who usually paper their cages!
