The Sound of Glass Hearts Shattering
By Alexis Jones
As I looked into your eyes
I heard a crack.
A tiny little fracture
In front of my back.
Then I saw the tear,
And I knew that crack
Wasn't in front of my back,
But in front of yours.
I heard the sound of breaking glass.
A forehead connecting with a windshield.
A teacup kissing a wall.
A leg breaking after being healed.
Birds scattering from a telephone wire,
The shards flew apart.
Soared out of your chest,
And made a tear in my heart.
Blood spurting from our geysers,
We are dying together.
Yours is a flash, and mine is a drain.
I wish I could die faster.
It's hard to watch a fire
Even when you started it.
A bonfire turned into a burning building,
And I saw your soul turn into a pit.
I have to leave.
And I'll bring your heart with me.
The sound ringing in my ears.
I don't want to, but I will.
