The giant monarch butterfly sees me first as I,
falling down the road, take to the chance embrace
And begin our dance.
Wings flicker gold and brown
We spill into and around each other.
A giddy loop.
I incline gently in and, in turn, you take my arm.
Suddenly showing me something by the path then soaring and flittering towards the sun.
We reprise all our ballroom moves; this the fourth recital.
But today's dance is the longest;
One to cherish.
Because you needed to show me right now.
That we had made it.
That the warm sunny light has prevailed
And it is time to waltz.
Your delicate wings tickle my skin.
We bow gracefully out of step
Falling in and out
And in a snap you are gone
Another dance to be had.
Beautiful monarch butterfly
Dancing in the sun.
A dance that is in fact a song.
