Ello Quick Tips From One Newbie to Another
Learning a new platform can be difficult, and I wanted to share some of the things I have learned so far in response to some of the confusion I have been seeing with all us newbies. If there is anything that you would like to add to this list, please comment below so that we can all learn from each other!
1. Who are all these strangers I didn't follow?
When setting up a new account, Ello suggests accounts for you to follow. Unless you clicked "skip" on that part of the setup, you started with probably 20-40 accounts so that you wouldn't have an empty feed before adding on your own. If you see someone in your feed that you don't want there, click on their user name and unfollow from their profile page. If there are a lot of accounts you want to unfollow, go to your profile page and click on "Following" and unfollow from there.
2. What does it mean when I "star" an account?
You have two feeds for the accounts that you follow: "Following" and "Starred." This allows you to sort the accounts that you follow into a primary and secondary feed if you wish. You could star the accounts you want to make sure you never miss, or you could star the ones you don't need to always see, whichever you prefer!
3. Why did I see a naked person in my feed?
This is because someone you currently follow posted it. If you don't want to see that type of post, unfollow that account. Ello was created by and for artists. The study of human anatomy through nudes is an important tradition in art, which is why Ello allows those types of posts, but you don't have to see it if you don't want to. I highly doubt quilters will start creating nudes out of fabric....although....
4. Do hashtags work?
5. I'm not sure if I like how this platform displays comments, photos, search results, etc....
Ello is currently in Beta, which means it is still in the early development stages and new features are coming all the time. If you think there is a feature that could be improved, send feedback to the people at Ello.
There is a treasure of information available on the WTF page including Tips, FAQ's, the Ello Bill of Rights, and more! You can get to "Help" on the website by clicking on your profile avatar in the upper right corner. This will give you a drop down menu. On the iOS app, navigate to "Help" by clicking the three dashes in the upper left corner to reveal the menu.
Don't forget to add the tips you have picked up in the comments!
