So, there's a tape revival, bet you've not heard about it as you're currently busy buying vinyl... and, to be fair, I do have some ideas on why vinyl has surpassed MP3's sales worldwide: they're a highly collectible affair, they're supposed to sound WAY better (which is sometimes true, just not always), and a whole buncha Millennials are just discovering them, and find it all super cute.
Yah, I get it.
Thing is Sony's (now huge) bright yellow Sports Walkman WAS the first iPod and, ok, mebbe you can't run around with all your music from place to place (I mean, you CAN run with the one tape, and maybe another one hidden within your huge ass fanny pack), but it WAS the first time you had the chance to make your own recordings/mixtapes, also: I think it's time to disprove tapes sound bad.
"There’s this myth of tapes being lo-fi; it’s not only pretty much untrue, but tapes are laterally versatile in their own way. Professionally dubbed, or ProDub tapes (not the ones you’d buy in the store), come in different frequency ranges, the highest of which go up to 20,000 hz – if you require better than that you’re probably stressed out enough by your super-human ears anyway;" says D Vikram Babu in this article on Daily Bandcamp.
So, now that I've blown some steam off, the Wichelroede Store has some kick butt new releases on tape lined up for you. They started the whole thing with a Beatrice Dillon/Ben UFO split, then moved on to a Jayda G/LNS split, and are currently releasing a Cloudface/Powder split that you can listen to (snippets, not the whole deal) here. This new tape come with a tote bag, you can totally check the specs out here:
