I wrote this poem for my dear friend after she finally ended her relationship with someone she should never have been with in the first place. The poem is a response to a portrait she painted of him.
No smile will ever break his lips.
He holds there the face of things that passed
and only he should know
what words might utter should time allow his gaze
to meet your eyes
and seek some mercy for a passion
only he can bear.
No light will ever shine upon his eyes.
He holds his future fixed and firmly cast
so only you can see
what dreams are streaked and dabbed upon his face;
what hope he trusts
you find behind his potent grin
and pleading stare.
