Okay, serious writerly question time ... How do you reconcile your desire to post short stories and share and get critiques, etc., on here or Tablo, etc., with the fact that said short stories then cannot be submitted to magazines like Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, etc., because they consider that having been "published" online?
This question comes as I make a large list of places to which I want to submit stories, but after reading the requirements and "first rights" language for nearly all of them, it seems everything I've posted here is off the submittable list now. I understand the desire to publish only original, never-before-seen stuff - who wants to read a magazine where the stories are already on the net for free - but it does seem to put writers in a silo of their own creativity. One of the many things I have loved about Ello is its soundboard quality.
I also wonder if I rewrite something or expand it from a blurb here, would that be acceptable?
