I feel like in seeing the worst of America, we also see the best. In the face of a government veering towards fascism people - Democrat, Republican, Independent - are standing up and speaking out with passionate defences of the America they believe in. People take to the streets every day. They defy orders to remain silent as they post truths about science, climate change, free speech. Lawyers are at US airports right now fighting to free those in detention.
I've been binge-watching the West Wing, to make myself feel better - a beautiful alternative reality. I adore the show, but in the past I've always thought the idealism, their faith in America as a country, and their respect for the office of the president to be a bit twee. A bit blind. In a way, Trump reinforces that; you can't respect the office of the president when he is president. He doesn't respect it himself. But in another way, you can really believe in that faith and idealism when you see people so furious, so devastated, by what Trump and his team are doing.
These are Interesting Times, and those paying attention are rightfully scared. But it's hard not to have hope when so many people are speaking out.
