Me and your house
We’ll have five
steps leading to the front door
Because I grew up with four
And we’ll have babies
thumping down our threshold, mashing
up that which is beneath them, but the house
The cupboards will have hinges joined like climber’s knot,
the yoke at our hip.
It will be there, holding
The beds, the entertainment centers,
the shelves of books and bibles will
sustain through the rumble
of their fresh fleshed feet,
demanding their steps make noise, roar.
The House will sing,
something heavy and spirited.
Electrify our tea cups and ashtrays, light
our lamps and our birthday candles,
It's sweet hum lingering like smoke
Against our face
The house will warm up,
The house will warm up so well in the sun!
It will heat the food while we rest,
it will make the plants pump
The house will fill,
The house will let the rays
dry the paint on our walls -- Our spit,
We’ll frame famous sculptures
in wooden stick shifts littering the mantle,
fill walls with enlarged candids of our grannies
we will share together.
When we paint and repaint and repaint and repaint
this house will lift its limbs
