A wise man once told me, “Don’t tell someone what you can do. Show them”.
In the spirit of that sage wisdom I decided to take the sample Hawking Thought-Experiment Quote … and make it real.
“Consider a pair of twins. Suppose that one twin goes to live on the top of a mountain while the other stays at sea level. The first twin would age faster than the second. Thus, if they met again, one would be older than the other. In this case, the difference in ages would be very small, but it would be much larger if one of the twins went for a long trip in a spaceship at nearly the speed of light. When he returned, he would be much younger than the one who stayed on earth...In the theory of relativity, there is no unique absolute time, but instead each individual has his own personal measure of time that depends on where he is, and how he is moving.”
It’s a complex idea to distill into one image. So I decided to interpret it literally. Initially one twin lived on a mountain and the other at sea level. I incorporate a snow-capped mountain and a tropical beach. One twin goes off to explore the galaxy. I illustrate this using a comet-like ship crisscrossing space in an arc reminiscent of an electron swirling around the nucleus of an atom. Then there’s the physical representation of the twins. I reinforce this twice, where the adult twins are nondescript but are irrevocably linked. And as infants, framing the settings where the twins originally resided.
What’s with the babies anyway? Let’s just say Stanley Kubrick and the Starchild have a lot to answer for…
The second piece is a movie poster I designed. The movie is an independent short called Quantum. Spoiler alert, it involves time travel and siblings that enjoy reading about the evil machinations of the Reverse-Flash. I’d like to think this illustration invokes the spirit of Steven Hawking’s imagination. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6562296/
The third piece is called the Imaginauts. If the first twin is going to go out and explore the universe, I expect him or her to do so in style!
