A woman in her late twenties, petite with long brown hair, walks home from work on a cloudy summer afternoon. She strolls down the sidewalk from her bus stop. The music drifting through her ear buds is upbeat, electronic dance tunes.
The wind picks up and the clouds darken. She picks up her pace, eager to get inside before it rains.
Crossing the street, unease settles in. The sky is cloudy and the wind tosses leaves about. The air is heavy. Glancing about, she notices a dark figure keeping pace with her. She can't make out any features but he looks sinister and her good mood dissipates. A drop hits her face and she turns away from her stalker. Ripping out her ear buds, she runs homes. She'll be safe there.
The sky opens up as she nears her house. Within seconds she's soaked through. She reaches her front steps and stumbles up them. Her numb wet fingers search for her keys, tucked in the bottom of her purse. She fishes them out and drops them, hands trembling from cold and fear. After struggling with the keys, she finally pops them in the keyhole and turns the lock. She watches for the man but sees no one.
Has he fallen behind? Did she imagine him?
Either way, it isn't worth waiting for in the freezing rain. She enters the house and shoves the door closed. But there's resistance and it refuses to shut all the way. Pulse racing, she whips around. A shoe blocks the entrance. A pale hand curls over the edge of the door and pushes it open. The dark figure enters. She screams and runs down the hall towards the kitchen. She needs a weapon, a sharp knife she can fend him off with. Mere steps from the kitchen, he slams into her. They tumble to the ground. She gasps for breath and struggles against him. He's pinned her to the floor and she can't move.
Heart pounding, she searches for anything she can use to escape or injure him. The hallway is empty. She remembers cleaning up the day before.
His fingers wrap around her throat and the pressure cuts off any breath she's managed to regain. Her futile attempts to break free resume but she knows it's too late. Her visions narrows and the world dims. A bright flash lights up the hallway and reveals her attacker. Her eyes widen as she recognizes the man on top of her. A loud clap of thunder follows her into death, her attacker's name on her lips.
