The Rise: Day Five
Standing there before her was a large burly man. He had to stand at least 6’3 and he had a long full beard. Obviously wearing clothes made from the hides of animals he had killed himself. Taking off his animal skin hood you could see a thick mane of long hair. Slowly he lowers his axe upon seeing that the intruder in his house was a young woman. Lily stood in complete fear, unsure of his intentions but also quite certain that she was looking at Frank. Inching her way into the living area of the cabin, she sits down on a chair next to the fireplace keeping an eye on this large man in front of her.
“Do I need to ask your name or is it safe to assume your Frank and this is your cabin?”
The man looks at her closely with mild surprise as she speaks.
“Yea you can assume that as that's just who I am. Now since this is my cabin, it would seem downright appropriate that you tell me who you are and how the hell you found my cabin” Lily seemed a bit relieved that at least she knew who this was and that he spoke actual English although a little broken.
“I'm Lily and to be honest I don't know how I got to this place or time” Lily says while poking the fire to make sure it stays lit.
Frank's expression changes a little to one of knowing, indicating that he might know more about what's going on.
“Yea that sounds about right I reckon. You found this place out in the woods close to a river I suppose?”
Lily stands up quickly and spins around to face Frank and look him in the eyes.
“How….how did you know about the river? I've looked around and can't seem to find that river anywhere.”
Frank takes his coat off and sits down on a bench against one of the walls.
“You'd be the 3rd woman that ended up in my cabin in the last three months, the other two said something about a river too so I just ventured a guess. I reckon whatever brought those other two here musta brought you as well”
Lily say on the chair with few options to her. She couldn't just leave the cabin. As she sat there trying to rationalize her situation she began to come to terms with the fact that nothing about what was going on was normal.
“So what is it that brought me here then?”
Frank looks out of the corner of his eye and softly answers..
“The Indian folk here call it Ch’eekéé”
“What's it mean? Or do you know?”
Frank turns and looks directly at Lily to make sure she understand him perfectly
“Best I can make of it ma'am is rise or the rise. They claim it's been in these woods for a very long time”
“I'm not sure where or when I'm from but I have a strange feeling this rise will be here for a really long time”
Frank, looking Lily right in the eyes responds with an unexpected response.
“Yea one of them other gals said something similar, claimed she was from 1987 or some crazy talk like that.”
Lily remembers seeing a plate with that date on it and the name as well.
“Was her name Mary by chance?”
Frank seemingly stunned for a brief moment looks at Lily
“How in the hell could you know who she was? Unless you know her from back east. You from Boston or Philadelphia?”
Lily refrains from wanting to laugh at the thought.
“No sir I'm from California, northern part actually”
“California? Never heard of no place called that. That down south of the hills there?”
Lily had no idea where she was at the moment so direction was hard to give. But this might be an opportunity to find out where she was in relation to the east coast.
“Well sir I have no idea where I am so I would have no idea how to tell you where it is from here”
“You're in the Appalachian mountains right now if that helps”
“Yes, so California is way out west on the coast”
“West? Coast? There ain't no coast out there. That's all Spanish and French land anyhow. Ain't no way your from out there unless you're one of them French gals”
Frank no more said the word French before that same blinding light appeared again. Regaining focus, Lily stands up and quickly looks around. The windows are back as are all the plates on the wall and the door on the bedroom and bathroom. She quickly starts looking at all of the plates and sees the most recent date of 1987 which means that she somehow is back in her own time again. Sitting down Lily sighs a sigh of relieve. Looking out the window she sees the snow falling as hard as ever. Still trapped. Lily walks into the bathroom and is hit by the light again and suddenly is in the same abandon cabin. Her frustrations begins to build as she tried desperately to make sense of why she is here and how she can get out.
As the sun goes down the cabin begins to get colder. No glass in the Windows and nothing in sight to cover up with. Snow blowing in. This was going to be a long night.
Will Lily survive?
